The Firefly Transition Room

Ages 4/5 Year-Olds

In place of our Kindergarten program, we offer a program for older four-year-olds as well as children who do not meet the Sept. 1st birth date deadline required to enroll in a public school Kindergarten. This class is designed for children that have completed a four-year-old program. Children should have a strong phonics background and be socially ready for a program that introduces Kindergarten level skills at a pace appropriate for the class. This classroom, also known as our “Transition classroom” is designed for children who have birthdays after September 1st and are not age eligible for Kindergarten.  Many of the children in this classroom have completed a four year old curriculum and have the basic skills needed for Kindergarten.  With the extra year provided to these students. we build on these skills and continue to be emergent in our approach to allow for investigation of child led topics of interest. 

Phonics, writing, math, science, social studies, and the arts  are explored throughout the daily activities and prepare children to excel when they enter Kindergarten.

Phonological awareness: Teachers introduce engaging oral language experiences such as songs, poems, books, and word games that include rhyming and alliteration which feature sound patterns and give students a strong phonics foundation.  When writing, children are encouraged to listen to the sounds and write the letter they hear.  Opportunities for writing are encouraged throughout the classroom. Writing materials can be utilized for various purposes such as making signs in blocks, making a card in the art area, or making a grocery list in dramatic play.
